Seasonality and Local Programs
L&M offers red, white, and yellow onions year-round. We plant on our farms in California and Kansas for peak seasons and work closely with partners in North Carolina and New Mexico; and transition production accordingly to offer our customers excellent quality and all varieties throughout the year.
Our New Mexico, Kansas, and North Carolina onion programs offer our customers the benefits of local-grown programs including custom local packaging, strong ties to state department of ag programs, and consumer point of sale materials.
Onions contain a number of important vitamins and minerals. Onions contain an antioxidant called quercetin, which has been shown to protect against cataracts, heart disease, and cancer. They may also help prevent bone-density loss and osteoporosis and have anti-inflammatory benefits.
Tips for cutting
Many people experience watery eyes when slicing onions. To reduce the effects of enzymes in the onion responsible for eye irritation, put onions in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before slicing and use a very sharp kitchen knife when you’re ready to cut.
Store onions away from other produce items at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Onions can last on the counter for up to 2 months. Refrigerate after cutting for up to 2 weeks.
