Seasonality and Uses
L&M has cantaloupes available May – October. Cantaloupes are a sweet and delicious treat, sure to please in the warm summer months. Great in fruit salad, fruit salsa, on its own, or sliced thin and placed in a glass of ice water for a slightly sweet, refreshing drink.

Health Benefits
Cantaloupes offer a whole host health benefits. There is a high concentration of Vitamin A which protects eye health, protects against emphysema and improves lung health. Cantaloupe also contains Vitamin C, which boosts the immune system, fights cancer and can discourage stroke and heart attack. Cantaloupe also contains folate which helps prevent birth defects. It is a fat-free, cholesterol-free, very low sodium and low calorie food.

Storage
Store ripe melons in the refrigerator, cutting only when you are ready to eat. After cutting, return any leftovers to the fridge for up to 4 days.

Honeydew

L&M has Honeydews available May – October. Honeydews offer a nice mild sweetness – perfect for fruit salads or solo snacking. They’re also a popular choice for the Italian inspired appetizer, “prosciutto & melon.”

Health Benefits
Honeydew contains Vitamin C, which boosts the immune system, fights cancer and can discourage stroke and heart attack. Honeydew also contains potassium, which helps regulate heartbeat and keeps your blood pressure down. It also contains B-6 compound which is necessary for the production of serotonin, which helps regulate your mood; don’t worry, eat melon! It is a fat-free, cholesterol-free, very low sodium and high in Vitamin C food.

Storage
Store ripe melons in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. After cutting, store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Watermelons are the classic summer favorite. L&M offers watermelon throughout the summer. Great for snacking, salads, salsas, kebobs, and freezing for tasty ice cubes!

Health Benefits
Watermelon is a good source of Vitamin A, which protects eye health, protects against emphysema and improves lung health. It also contains Vitamin C, which boosts the immune system, fights cancer and can discourage stroke and heart attack. Watermelon contains lycopene, an antioxidant that helps fight cancer and other diseases; it is fat-free, cholesterol-free, very low sodium and high in Vitamins A and C.

Storage
Store watermelon at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. After cutting, store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Studies show that storing at room temperature increases the lycopene and beta carotene levels making it even healthier than when it was harvested.
